#day12 #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth #MyStory : Gearing up for Treatment

 #day12

*diagnosed in 2016, recounting my story to raise awareness.
Gearing up for treatment required a few things and with my first treatment beginning on August 3rd, I needed to prepare!
First step to getting chemo is to get a port. This is what they place under your skin on your chest that connects to a vein where the chemo can easily be given. The actual procedure was not painful, but I don't think they gave me enough twilight because I watched the whole procedure being done through a reflective window in the room. I am pretty sure I had someone who was training someone else on how to do these procedures. Let's just say my port did the job but it was a pretty uncomfortable one the entire few years that it was in. They gave me about a week to recover before chemo would start. Man that thing hurt.. I couldn't imagine them poking it with a needle but somehow they do and you get over it.

I also prepared by reading up on foods that would aid my body through chemo. My dad and I stocked up at Whole Foods and bought the healthiest things we could find 😁! I loved that because it made me feel taken care of and loved. Thanks dad!!

My mom was going through her own health battle at the time, but she found time to come with me to my appointments to make sure I was under the best care. We walked a tough road together under different circumstances and the comfort of that was beautiful. Love you mom!

While the reality of what I was going through was unimaginable and so incredibly difficult, life still carried on. The next day after getting my port we showed up for Nnenna's swim meet.

The day after that we celebrated Toben's first birthday.

We tried our best to carry on as normal as possible. The children really didn't know what was happening at the time and so one way of "protecting" them from everything was to KEEP GOING! This mom was not going to miss a thing!
